Most natural-face English willow bats need knocking-in and light oiling before their first match to harden the surface and prevent cracks. Take your time — a well-prepped bat lasts far longer.

Your gloves should fit snugly with about a fingertip of room at the end. Too loose and you lose feel; too tight and they wear out fast.
